So, here goes a very small snap-shot...

As like the saying, 'Don't fail to plan unless you plan to fail', a crystal clear planning is the basic necessity for successful execution of a project and estimation forms of the one important basics of the plan.

By Software estimation what we estimate on:
        1) Effort: Estimation of amount of work to be done. Eg: Number of Function Points involved or LOC to be developed.
        2) Time & Cost: Time needed to get the work done. Usually expressed in work-months/man-months/Person-weeks.
        3) Resource: Involves estimation of hardware (Well we can't develop a cloud management system with just 2 Desktop terminals!), software (Need to pay for MS products!), human resource (most important part: rightly skilled human resource availability), network infrastructure etc...

So, how are these estimations done and what are considered while estimating?
Input or factors to be considered:
        1) Historical data (Experience matters!!!)- Historical data from prior project on similar domain/technology/
        2) Complexity - Effort needed for developing a inventory management system and space shuttle monitoring system are not same. Complexity of the requirement matters!
        3) Resource Skill level - A very important factor, which leads to include training cost. In some cases, this is a deciding factor for project implementation platform too!
        4) Prior experience on similar projects - Lessons learned always helps in future!
        5) Tools - Usage of which can ease the job to fasten the implementation/test phases. There is difference in writing code in Eclipse and EditPlus.
        6) Process - Agile/XP/Waterfall too matters. (2hrs/day on Stand-up meetings will have impact on T&C!)
        7) Development platform - They say, its faster and easier to develop using Java/JEE.
        8) Of course Software requirement :) (We are not arrows with out target! But includes both FR and NFR)

So, how these estimated are done? There are lots and lots of estimations techniques: COCOMO, parametric model - Cost Driver based estimation, SDM, SLIM etc...

After doing all, should we rely on what was estimated during project initiation till project closure? A very important thing, estimate must be revised over the phases of the project at different stages. Requirement takes different image over the course of execution and as usual unexpected surprised welcomes every new day. Beyond everything, T&C requirements should be kept on track. Cost-over run project gets scrapped too! These mandates the revision of estimates at due intervals.

Reminds me of my S/W Engg Prof. iterating, "None of the Software projects completes on estimated cost and time".
After all, those are just estimates and not actuals! We need something under the term called, "Variance" too!

Back!

Can't stop again! Lots of names were on row: Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Jyoti Basu, Biju Patnaik, Kanshi Ram, Karpoori Thakur, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Jagjivan Ram, Jyotiba Phule ... a lot more.

Atlast on 4th of November 2008, they announced a non-politician: "The Hindustani classical music legend Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is chosen for the Bharat Rathna award".

Design Patterns - Command Pattern

As said in the last post, here I'm starting with my first post on Design Pattern implementation in Java.

A Small Intro On Core Design Patterns:
        Many define Pattern with different statements. The most common one: pattern is a solution for common and reoccurring design issue.
The term Pattern was coined by Christopher Alexander in his book, "A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, and Construction".
GoF classified patterns based on Purpose and Scope.
Purpose criteria classifies patterns based on what the pattern does:
        1)Creational patterns - dealts with object Creation
        2)Structural patterns - composition of class and objects,
        3)Behavioral patterns - responsibility of class and objects.
Scope classifies based on where it applies to : class or object.

Let me start my series on Design patterns with one of the object behavioral patterns: Command.

Command Pattern:
Command pattern, also called as Action or Transaction pattern deals with decoupling between the invoker and the receiver.
Necessity of Command Pattern occurs when it is needed to invoke a method without knowledge about the method or the object, which holds it. Here, the operation/action to be performed is encapsulated into an object.Command pattern is used to:
    1) Decouple the object with invokes the operation from the object which performs the operation
    2) Combine multiple command in to a Composite command (Macro Command)

Components of Command Pattern:
        The key of command pattern is Command interface (or Abstract Class), which declares the abstract operations. The concrete command class provides implementation details for the operation declared in the Command interface.

UML diagram of Command Pattern:

Example:
        A small description of each of the above elements with implementation details:
. Client: Responsible for creating the Command object and setting the receiver to it.

import pattern.command.*;

public class CommandClient {

public static void main(String[] args) {
Receiver receiver = new Receiver();
Command incCommand = new IncrementCommand(receiver);
Command decCommand = new DecrementCommand(receiver);
Invoker invoker = new Invoker();
invoker.setIncCommand(incCommand);
invoker.setDeccCommand(decCommand);

invoker.add();
invoker.add();
invoker.remove();
invoker.add();
invoker.undoAll();
System.out.println(receiver.getValue());
}

}

CommandClient.java

. Invoker: Invokes the execute method of the Command. For implementing undo action, this class keeps track of commands called and performs the undo operation accordingly.

package pattern.command;
import java.util.Stack;

public class Invoker {
Stack commands;
Command incCommand;
Command decCommand;

public Invoker(){
commands = new Stack();
}

public void setIncCommand(Command cmd){
this.incCommand = cmd;
}

public void setDeccCommand(Command cmd){
this.decCommand = cmd;
}

public void undo(){
if(!commands.empty()){
Command cmd = (Command)commands.pop();
cmd.undo();
}
}

public void add(){
incCommand.execute();
commands.add(incCommand);
}

public void remove(){
decCommand.execute();
commands.add(decCommand);
}

public void undoAll(){
Command cmd = null;
while(!commands.empty()){
cmd = (Command)commands.pop();
cmd.undo();
}
}
}

Invoker.java

. Receiver: Class, which preforms the actual functionality.

package pattern.command;

public class Receiver {
private int value = 0;

public int getValue(){
return this.value;
}

public void increment(){
value++;
}

public void decrement(){
value--;
}
}

Receiver.java

. Command: Represents the operation. Implements the execute method which invokes the corresponding operation in the receiver. Defines the binding between the Receiver and action.

package pattern.command;

public interface Command {
public void execute();
public void undo();
}

Command.java

package pattern.command;

public class IncrementCommand implements Command {
private Receiver receiver;

public IncrementCommand(Receiver receiver){
this.receiver = receiver;
}

public void execute() {
receiver.increment();
}

public void undo() {
receiver.decrement();
}

}

IncrementCommand.java

package pattern.command;

public class DecrementCommand implements Command {

private Receiver receiver;

public DecrementCommand(Receiver receiver){
this.receiver = receiver;
}

public void execute() {
receiver.decrement();
}

public void undo() {
receiver.increment();
}

}

DecrementCommand.java

In Real-time:
        The most common example of command pattern implementation is in Swing and Struts.
Command pattern in Swing: When a JButton in the application's window is clicked it invokes the corresponding method in the application code.
Here JButton, a component of Swing has its implementation with in Swings and its not aware of the application's implementation. But the method in the application specific code is called when it is clicked. This method invocation from framework's code to the application code uses command pattern.

Command pattern in Struts: Command pattern is used in the invocation of 'execute/perform' method of specific Action class by struts framework on a request submission from JSP.
During initial stages of development using JSP - Servlets, before the days the frameworks like struts, the Action Servlet / Controller Servlet will have a huge if block to identify each request and then perform the corresponding functionality/method.
Struts replace those if-blocks with command pattern. Struts uses command pattern for evaluation and execution of a method (execute/perform) in the receiver class (Action class).

Blogging on Technology

I thought of having my technical thoughts out of this and so created one for that long back. So back again here for my technical thoughts too.

Being in to yet another software servicing company in India, no need to say part of my work is in to AMS and some times in to ADM. As far I've witnessed so far in this AMS/ADM industry, people's curiosity to learn upcoming technology (especially in the open source area) dies day by day until and unless it is needed in their day-to-day work. No need to tell, "PUNCTUALITY" is one among them. Shashi Tharoor's series in TOI on Indianness had a lot to mention about it. One among the very first things that flashes in our mind when we think of our punctual habits is the timing being maintained by our transport system. Be it road or rail or air: no partiality, its same everywhere, none used to be on time :) I don't think, we ever we had a history of all flights on single day in a single airport took-off and landed on time. But history changes and the gets the credit too!

Yes, this is about none other than landing of two spice jet flights in the nation's second private bound airport - Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The two spicejet flights from Ahemedabad and Mumbai landed 40 mins ahead of schedule at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on the day when the airport's commercial operations commenced. But the most surprising thing, the authorities are not aware of the change in schedule of these two flights (Their site lists the departure and arrival status of all the flights bound to the airport). But this is surprising, it's completely against the Indian nature: we are always late, sometimes may be on time, but never ahead. Any how because of unscheduled landing it cornered the credit of the first flight to land in GMR airport.

Good start RGIA :)

UI Messages

Back again the blogosphere !!!
Was thinking about updating the blog for a long while and infact had a long list to blog. But this is the bigger one.....heart got stuck for a sec....this is wat I thought to write, a minute after the tremor yesterday.
I have experienced tremors for 4 times in my life...but this last one freightened me a little.

First one happened tht morning on 26th Dec 2004. It was a Sunday and I was awakened at abt 6:15 am itself by a short tremor which last for hardly less than a min. Then came the news, sea water is getting into the city, Chennai.... no one judged tht it's Tsunami, the killer wave... its an unforgettable day which changed the life of many.

Second one... it happened just 3 days after I landed in Tokyo in August 2005. It's nearly 3'O clock, after the noon. I felt as something is shaking ...oh my goodness it’s an earth quake..the building shaked for nearly 3 times. I was shocked. There was no reaction from most of my team mates, very few in my team got disturbed and just whispered to their neighbor, "Jishin desune (Oh..earthquake)" and continued their job. Hey, it's a matter of life...how come they are able to react (???) like this. Is it because they are used to it or is it because of the higher precautionary measures they are having? But it was indigestible for me. I stared at my monitor for more than 10 mins with out doin any thing...trying to bring myself back to the normal state.

My third experience with a tremor was when I was in a party in one of my colleague’s house. It was very mild. It seemed as I too got used to this shaking environment.

The last one which I felt y'day(31-08-2006) evening was little strong. It didn't last for a minute. But there was a big shake in the mid. I thought of running down (my office is just in the 2nd floor). That moment I felt as every thing is goin to fall down...really my heart got struck for a sec. But there was no reaction from any of my team mates....they continued staring the monitor as if nothing has happened. May be it’s their nature..but this patience or politeness whatever they call is beyond the extrems. Later, read in the news : it measured 4.8 in Richter scale and its 3 out of 7 in the Japanese scale. Thank God...there was no damage any where.

Tremors...it's little more thrilling than my favorite Roller-Coasters!!!

Holidays..India & Japan

Got a mail today morning from my PL with the subject :oyesumi wo itadakimasu [I'm on leave]. So thought of looking to the list of Japanese holidays and there came the surpising facts abt the holidays these hard workers are njoying.

Always I thought India is the country with higher number of holidays : 13 national hoilidays a year and few more local holidays.
But now I feel Japanese are njoing more holidays than we Indians. Number of official holidays in Japan is 15.

List of Japanese National holidays :
Jan 1 : o-shogatsu [New Year Day]
Jan 2nd Mon : seijin-no-hi [Coming of Age Day]
Feb 11 : kenkoku-kinenbi [National Foundation Day]
March 21 : shumbun-no-hi [Vernal Equinox Day]
April 29 : midori-no-hi [Greenery Day]
May 3 : kempo-kinembi [Constitution Day]
May 4 : Kokumin-no-kyujitsu [People's Day]
May 5 : kodomo-no-hi [Children's Day]
July 20 : umi-no-hi [Maraine Day]
Sep18 : keiro-no-hi [Respect For Aged Day]
Sep 23 : shubun-no-hi [Autumnal Equinox Day]
Oct 2nd Mon : taiiku-no-hi [Sports Day]
Nov 3 : bunka-no-hi [Culture Day]
Nov 23 : kinro-kansha-no-hi [Labour Thanks giving Day]
Dec. 23 : tenno-tanjobi [Emperor's Birthday]

Apart from the above list, Japanese njoy few more authorized unofficial holidays,
Jan 1-3 : New Year holiday
April 29 - May 5 : Golden Week (Along with Sat and Sun you can get nearly 10 days holidays...)
August 15 - Aug 18 : o-bon (Festival of Souls) and natsu yasumi (Summer holiday....in August!!!)
Dec. 23 - Dec. 25 : Unexpected.....Chirstmas is not a national holiday in Japan. But since it comes along with their Emperor's b'day X'mas too is a holiday.
Dec. 31 : omisoka (New Year's Eve)

January is month of holidays....last January I had office only for 13 days. June.....oh God here in Japan too there is no holiday in June.
Finally the total number of holidays in a year accounts to almost 28...nearly a month. But being hard workers Japanese deserve all these holidays atleast to njoy a small part of their life.

How it will be if we have this many number of holidays in India!!! But apart from our official holidays we ourselves declare too many holidays for our own reasons....which may even count to twice of their total holidays...lets njoy life in our own way!!!

Hanami

Sakura(サクラ) is the unofficial National Flower of Japan. I read this article in a web portal. This is a collection of few of those techno-jargons. It's quite intresting......

Bangalored - If your hot IT job is outsourced to India, you've been "Bangalored".
Blog - Amazingly enough, there are still people that don't know what a blog is. According to Merriam-Webster, "blog" topped the list of words that people looked up at its site in 2004.
Gatesed - If you encounter one of the unfortunate side-effects of using Microsoft technology, you've been "Gatesed." In typical IT usage, "If it Gatesed (BSOD), you were SOL.
Hot spot - Some people think that hot spots have something to do with the origins of volcanoes, while others think they are just the preferred lounge locations for cats and dogs. In the world of IT, though, the term refers to places that have wireless Internet connections. Many national and local retailers, especially coffee shops, are adding wireless hot spots to provide the tech-savvy another reason to stop in and spend.
Mouselexia - The inability to use a mouse correctly. Some people are naturally mouselexic, while others are just struck with mouselexia when an IT guru is looking over their shoulder.
Offshored - Politically correct term for having your job outsourced to another country. See "Bangalored".
Netlag - The unfortunate physical side-effects of being online for an extended period of time. According to The chronicle of Higher Education, "the condition resembles jetlag, but can also entail eye and muscle strain". You knew there was a word for it!
Phish - Email has a way of giving words new meaning. First it was "spam"; now it's "phishing".Phishing is using email or other Internet technology to trick people into giving up their passwords, credit card numbers or other private information. The most common scams involve sending legitimate-looking e-mails to hundreds of thousands of email addresses. The emails are built with HTML and look like real messages from legitimate ebusinesses. Recipients that click on any of the email links are taken to bogus sites, though, that are designed to capture people's private info.
Podcasting - Give a geek an iPod, and what's he going to do? Write a script to automatically fill it with interesting content.That, in a nutshell, is what podcasting is - a simple technology that lets users subscribe to a Internet audio broadcast, and have it automatically downloaded and synched to a portable media player (iPod). Podcasters create RSS XML feeds that contain links to MP3 files, along with a brief description of the file's contents. Many types of podcasts are already available, including music, sermons, talk shows and educational programming.
Tipping p - A phrase popularized by Malcom Gladwell's book "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference." In 2004, the phrase became a cliche applied to any technology that people were starting to become interested in. There are hundreds of thousands of blog entries about "The Tipping Point", which means that the term has probably reached some sort of tipping point in the blog-o-sphere.

ATP Open ... back to Chennai

It's New year in one week....crazy Tennis fans in the country can look forward to the only ATP tournament of South Asia. Google Suggest returns suggested results as you type .....this is technically amazing. Even if I type pretty fast it gets updated for every single keypress......brilliant folks in Google wrote all these innovative code. I just wanted to undersand the web interface and it's dynamic interface behind this.

I surfed the net and got little more informations. This live search has been implemented some time back in Apples' Spotlight feature. Apple might had inspired Google. I walked through Google's code & script. They are using XMLHttpRequest to send request to the server where they are havin the script which returns a HTML file. Event though this is someones innovation it's Google who first implemented it.

Once Google meant only a search engine ...now a lot more frm them.... Gmail, Desktop search tool, Google Suggest.....when are they goin to stop(???). I read today morning in a daily MS and Yahoo are busily enagaged in developin a the couterpart for Google's Desktop search tool and they are expecting to deliver the Beta vesrion by '05 Jan mid. Now wat are they goin to do to compete with Google Suggest......!!! Indeed Goggle is the uncrowned master in implementing web technologies with lot more innovations.

Thought of creating a blog

Being impressed by lots of blog sites, it's my wish for nearly 6 months to create a blog. Due to hectic work for a long time I was unable to do it and now (5.45 PM IST, 25th November 2004 ) atlast I debut here as a blogger.
I'm a Software Engineer by profession, working in web based technologies and Client server technologies. I luv surfing the net..my favorite time pass. I wish internet, the boon to the mankind, should be used in a very valuable manner, which I always want to do.
At some moments I was unable to share certain things with friends and others. It may be due to heavy workloads. I take this opportunity to publish my thoughts over here. Right now I don't know wat are all I'm goin to blog ...but I'm sure I'll do a better job here.

Happy bloggin'
